(Some people may not be able to do this last one at all times, of course). There are multiple ways you can limit these notifications. Work, family, planning — it all makes it very, very hard to put your phone down for even short periods of time. I need to get it under control, because I can’t teach my kids how to set healthy boundaries if I’m not doing it myself. It’s definitely something you still need to have some self-restraint to use, since you pick the apps that go on your block list and have a number of options for accessing them or overriding Steppin’s control, but it provides all the tools you need to make better decisions. Overall, I like this app xvlust a lot more than I thought I would, just because it’s so customizable.

I’ve even thought about adding Poshmark, where I spend so much time, but I decided against that because I earn money on Poshmark, so it’s already meeting the requirement of «doing something for myself,» which Steppin forces other apps to meet by making me walk around. Those are the two that suck up the majority of time I consider wasted in my average day, although I love them both so (so) much. Steppin doesn’t pre-identify social media, games, or any app, let alone block them for you. When I read the rundown, I assumed the app would work by locking up all my other apps until I hit a certain amount of steps every day, which made me nervous.

Spending a couple of hours every day on your phone may seem like definitely the norm these days — and it probably is for most people! I’m looking forward to the day when, say, my minutes of reading or other forms of exercise count toward my banked minutes, depending on which direction English and his team take with future updates, but for now, I’m enjoying using it as-is. This could be a detriment for some, since you might not appreciate losing a streak because you’re configuring the settings in a way that works best for you, or in the case that you might even need unfettered access to an app for some reason. Most weeks, I end up with between 10 or 15 hours of banked, unused time before the reset hits. What I really like, though, is having to pre-determine how many minutes I give myself when accessing blocked apps.

I’ve heard of some people even going so far as to buy actual boxes and lock their phone in for periods of time. On iPhones, you can head into your settings and mute all notifications from an entire app wholesale. And nope, it doesn’t have to be when you’re asleep — it can be any set of hours you don’t want distraction.
